Prof. Dr. István Czuriga received a Lifetime Achievement Award in Budapest on 4 May.
The award was granted by the Board of Trustees of the Foundation of Lajos Markusovszky and the Editor Committee of the Orvosi Hetilap.
Istvan Czuriga graduated in 1975 at the Medical University of Debrecen with a “summa cum laude” degree. He commenced his clinical carrier at the Department of Pulmonology of the University of Debrecen as a scientific fellow. Later he worked at the Heart and Lung Department and at the Department of Cardiology as a senior assistant lecturer, assistant professor, and later as an honorary associate professor, then full professor.
In 1984, the Outpatient Cardiology Clinic in the city of Debrecen was set up under his guidance, where outpatient cardiac rehabilitation also became available.
Professor Czuriga has a specialist degree in pulmonology, cardiology and cardiac rehabilitation, as well as licences in hypertonology, lipidology and echocardiography. He was awarded the title of “European Cardiologist” of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and “European Hypertension Specialist” of the European Society of Hypertension.
He wrote his PhD thesis on the clinical use of beta-blockers. He travelled several times to Canada, the United States of America and Israel on scientific fellowships.
His main areas of interest in clinical work are the diagnostics and treatment of coronary artery disease (he has performed over 10,000 coronary angiographies), heart failure and post-myocardial infarction secondary prevention and rehabilitation.
He is an honorary professor of the University of Debrecen and the University of Pécs Medical School, where he participated in the development and leadership of the Department of Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation. He participated in several international multicentre trials as principal investigator or national coordinator. Professor Czuriga has received several awards as an acknowledgment of his clinical and scientific achievements.
Scientific memberships:
Professor Czuriga is a member or board member of several national and international scientific and steering committees. He spent 15 years as the president of the Hungarian Society of Cardiology, and currently he is a member of the advisory board. He is also a member of the Hungarian Society of Atherosclerosis and Hungarian Society of Hypertension. He worked for the Hungarian College of Cardiology for over 10 years as secretary, and as president of the Clinical Practice Guideline Committee. He is a fellow of the ESC, member of the European Heart Failure Association, the European Association for Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation (EACPR) and professional gold member of the American Heart Association.
Publication activities:
Professor Czuriga is chief editor or editorial board member of several national scientific journals (Hungarian Medical Journal, Hungarian Archives of Internal Medicine, Training Review of General Physicians, Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation, Hypertension and Nephrology). To date he has published 7 books and over 50 book chapters, as well as over 250 national and international in extenso articles and over 100 citable abstracts.
